Nayan Kalnad is CEO and co-founder of Avegen, the company behind HealthMachine® — a powerful digital health platform transforming how chronic conditions are managed. Under his leadership, HealthMachine® has delivered real-world impact at scale, enabling both healthcare systems and pharmaceutical partners to overcome adoption barriers, improve patient outcomes, and deliver efficient and effective care.
Tell us about the innovation. What does it do, how does it help, who does it help and
why is it important?
HealthMachine® is a digital health platform that powers highly effective, compliant, outpatient
solutions for people living with chronic conditions. It helps healthcare systems and pharmaceutical companies overcome key barriers to treatment, from patient engagement to clinician workflow integration.
The platform consists of a robust set of tested building blocks which allow us to digitise clinical pathways at speed and scale, without cutting corners. We provide customisable outpatient management solutions which enable end-to-end digitisation of each step of a pathway.
By combining behavioural science with robust clinical design, HealthMachine® delivers adaptable
support that looks to improve self-management, boost treatment adherence, and reduce system burden. It’s already supporting over 2 million patients across multiple therapy areas, making a measurable difference in outcomes and cost efficiency. At a time when health systems are under growing pressure, HealthMachine® provides a scalable, proven way to deliver better care, faster.
Which health innovation networks have you been supported by?
We’ve been supported by multiple Health Innovation Networks as part of our growth journey.
Through the DigitalHealth.London Accelerator, led by Health Innovation Network South London, we received support including pitch coaching, strategic introductions to potential NHS partners, and access to workshops to refine both our product and market approach. We also worked with Health Innovation Manchester, who helped us review and sharpen our value proposition, and supported us in responding to key commercial and clinical questions.
What are the plans/next steps for this innovation?
We’re scaling HealthMachine® across new therapy areas to reduce wait times, improve treatment adherence, and free up clinical capacity. Our focus is on expanding our partnerships that help deliver measurable impact, from better patient engagement, improved quality of life, and reduced burden on frontline teams.
What’s your biggest piece of learning from innovating in the NHS?
One of the key learnings has been the value of building strong relationships and understanding the
diverse challenges across the system. Innovation in healthcare requires adaptability, collaboration, and a long-term approach to truly make a difference. We’ve also seen firsthand the positive impact our work has had on clinical teams and patients’ lives, there’s a clear need for digital solutions, and we’ve proven that they really work.
What are your hopes for the future?
Our goal is to become the leading patient management software, empowering healthcare providers with the tools they need to deliver efficient care at scale. We aim to redefine how digital health solutions support long-term conditions, driving better patient outcomes and reducing system strain worldwide.
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is definitely the people I work with. I’m fortunate to be part of a talented and passionate team at Avegen, all focused on making a real difference.
What are your three pieces of advice for budding health innovators?
Anchor your idea on the customer, don’t sell to friends, and build the right team.
