C2-Ai is helping hospitals improve patient safety, reduce mortality and complication risk, and clinical outcomes variation, by providing globally unique AI-backed insights.

Summary

Cheshire & Merseyside ICS was the first to implement C2-Ai’s Patient Tracking List (PTL) triage system across the system. This resulted in saving 125 excess bed-days per 1,000 patients on the PTL, due to less harm being caused and fewer unplanned admissions. There was also up to 15 minutes consultant administrative time saved per patient per triage, which can be used for clinical duties; as well as a 27% reduction in 52-week waiters during the first six weeks of deployment.

The innovation

The PTL triage system helps identify individuals waiting for surgery who may deteriorate more quickly. This enables surgical teams to prioritise people on waiting lists, take steps to reduce these risks, or to prepare expert treatment if these risks happen. The AI algorithm uses data from more than 450 million records from 46 countries from the last 30 years.

How the innovation has helped patients and the NHS

  • The reduction of surgery waitlists is a national priority, therefore offering a proven way to reduce long and growing surgery waitlists benefits patients, clinicians, and the NHS.
  • C2-Ai’s PTL system has independently verified evidence showing more than 1 excess bed day is saved per patient, including an 8% reduction in A&E attendances, 54% reduction in avoidable harm, 35% conversion to day case, 27% reduction in waiting list in the first six months of deployment and more than 60 minutes of consultant surgeon administrative time saved per patient per year.
  • C2-Ai offers a “GIRFT” (getting it right the first time) solution to trusts and ICSs, including SOPs (standard operating procedures) and governance templates. It is essentially an out-of-the box product for busy surgical teams.
  • C2-Ai has increased the number of customers it supports in the UK by 50%, with the solution installed in over 20 trusts in England as well as in two ICB regions (Cheshire & Merseyside ICB and Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB).
  • This includes signing a two-year contract to bring its PTL triage system, as part of wider digital strategy and collaboration, across Cheshire & Merseyside ICB (which is the second largest ICB in the country).
  • C2-Ai is growing its team to have the capability to scale up its work in surgery and develop new applications. This includes recruiting AI PhD and university graduates

How we supported

Health Innovation North West Coast (HINWC) has been involved every step of the way, including idea development, evaluation, commercialisation, and spread and adoption. HINWC introduced C2-Ai to local clinical, operational, and executive teams who have bought into the value of C2-Ai’s tools. C2-Ai has also been able to collaborate with other innovators in the north west, such as Surgery Hero and Docobo. HINWC has also supported C2-Ai to apply for every relevant funding opportunity available to it.

“Health Innovation North West Coast has been amazing. They’ve opened doors we didn’t even know were there. They’ve helped us get into the right conversations with the right people. We were identified as suitable to be spread nationally and that’s led to developing relationships with the health innovation networks for Yorkshire & Humber, East, West Midlands, and South West. It’s great to see networks working nationally with organisations, because that’s moving UK innovation to the next level.”
