Harnessing AI brain imaging to transform delivery of thrombectomy for stroke

Date: Tuesday, 18 March, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Hosted by: Health Innovation Oxford and Thames Valley

In January 2025 the UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer launched the government’s commitment to harness the power of artificial intelligence with a real-life story of a patient whose recovery following a stroke was transformed thanks to the use of AI technology.

Around 100,000 people in the UK experience a stroke each year, and that figure is expected to increase by 50% in the next decade. Stroke is the leading cause of disability; early identification, rapid decision-making and prompt treatment are essential to reduce brain damage and long-term disability. AI-supported imaging technology has enabled high-quality CT scans to be shared securely and quickly, is increasing timely referral for mechanical thrombectomy (MT) following strokes caused by blockage of a large artery in the brain. Six years ago barely a handful of stroke units in England were using AI brain imaging. Now all units are doing so. Over the same period use of MT has trebled, resulting in 1,000 more patients avoiding long-term disability annually. This success has been underpinned by strong local, regional and national collaboration alongside an extensive evaluation and implementation programme led by Health Innovation Oxford and Thames Valley.

The session is for anyone interested in transforming a patient pathway through the introduction of a digital innovation. Attendees will gain insights from regional and national clinical leaders, national commissioners, an industry partner and senior figures from the Health Innovation Network. They will learn how this approach to successful implementation can be applied in other clinical pathways.
