Approximately 410,000 older people live in care homes in the UK, according to a 2017 government study This is 4% of over 65-year-olds and rises to 16% of those aged 85 years and over. Around 5,500 different providers operate 11,300 care homes for the elderly, leading to considerable scope for variation in training and improvement practices.
The managing adult deterioration in care homes safety improvement programme (ManDetSIP) works to support care home staff at scale in identifying the early soft signs of deterioration in residents, communicating with multi-disciplinary teams, and taking early action when there are concerns.
The ManDetSIP is led by the National Patient Safety Team and delivered by AHSN-hosted Patient Safety Collaboratives (PSCs). The ManDetSIP supports the NHS England Patient Safety Strategy.
Aim: To reduce deterioration associated harm by improving the planning, identification, escalation and response (PIER) to physical deterioration by 2023. This is supported through work to improve co-ordination to create safe and reliable pathways across health and social care.
Key ambitions
- Adoption of deterioration management tools (RESTORE2/RESTORE2mini or equivalent) in at least 85% of care homes (including those homes caring for people with learning disabilities, autism, and mental ill-health) by the end of March 2023.
